Final Fantasy VII Revelation has divided parts of the series’ fanbase after Square Enix announced several optional features intended to reduce friction during the story. The game is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027.

The most controversial addition is an auto-leveling system that can bring characters up to the recommended level for the main progression, compensating for up to five levels of difference. Players will also be able to skip or adjust certain minigames, while the game’s toughest challenges are being moved toward exploration and endgame content.

These changes have prompted criticism from fans who believe that traditional role-playing game progression should require more grinding and preparation. The developers, however, say the goal is to address a problem encountered in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: players becoming stuck at a story boss because they had not completed enough side activities.

In an interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi described the debate as healthy because it raises broader questions about the nature of gameplay. He argued that Revelation is being designed for a market in which games compete with streaming services, reading and other forms of entertainment for players’ limited free time.

Hamaguchi also pointed to the franchise’s established audience, many of whom are now adults with busy schedules. According to his explanation, some players may want to experience the game but avoid it if progression becomes too time-consuming or difficult. Accessibility options are therefore intended to help more people play the title and support its continuation across generations.

The director stressed that these features do not determine the game’s core balance. The main difficulty has been designed for players who choose not to use the assistance systems, which can be disabled. Players who prefer the traditional experience will consequently be able to progress without the automatic level adjustment or other convenience options.

Square Enix’s stated approach is to offer a more customizable experience rather than impose a single progression model. Newcomers will be able to focus on the main story, while experienced players can pursue the more demanding encounters found in exploration and the endgame. Whether that balance satisfies both groups will be tested when Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027.
