A free Chrome extension called framedepth can add a stereoscopic 3D effect to videos viewed in a browser on the Steam Frame. The project was created by GitHub user guix8 and turns ordinary video into an image with a modest sense of depth.

Once enabled, the effect is applied to videos automatically. It can make YouTube viewing feel somewhat more immersive, although the result is subtle rather than a convincing sense of being present in the scene. A settings menu in Chrome lets users adjust the effect, including a pop-out slider that appears to have the strongest impact when turned up.

Installation is more involved than adding a standard Chrome extension. The Steam Frame needs to be in developer mode, and Chrome must first be installed through SteamOS using Konsole and Flathub. Users then download framedepth from GitHub, run its installation script in the terminal and load the extension in Chrome with the browser’s extension developer mode enabled.
