A new feature in LOVE magazine has revealed further details about Grand Theft Auto 6, including how Rockstar Games developed Jason and Lucia, and its plans for the fictional State of Leonida. The studio says it wants the setting to feel detailed enough for players to spend hundreds of hours exploring it.
Jason’s military background is not intended as a political statement, Rockstar says. The circumstances of his life lead him toward crime, including drug trafficking and robberies, while players will be able to influence some of his decisions. Lucia, by contrast, is described as a determined immigrant who grew up near Newark, close to Liberty City, before moving to Leonida. Her goal is to build a better life, and Rockstar aimed to make her a distinctive protagonist rather than a copy of characters such as Arthur Morgan or Niko Bellic.
The two leads are designed to complement one another, creating tension and contrast in their relationship. Raul serves as an older mentor who introduces them to more ambitious robberies and the criminal world of Vice City.
Rockstar says everyday details are a central part of Leonida’s design. The studio has dedicated writing and production resources to background material such as radio broadcasts, advertisements and conversations among pedestrians, intended to keep the world lively even when players are not actively engaging with it. Research in Miami and other parts of Florida also informed the setting, with the team speaking to residents, police officers and gang members.
The game’s satire will take aim at modern culture, including conspiracy theories, but Rockstar says it is not simply reproducing real-world memes or viral moments. Instead, it plans to create distorted versions of contemporary life within Leonida. The studio also describes the modern American Dream in more modest terms than in earlier GTA games: owning a home, supporting a family and paying off debt rather than accumulating extreme wealth.
