Nexus Mods has introduced new rules requiring mod authors to disclose whether they used Generative AI and, if so, how it contributed to their work. The site is not banning AI-generated mods outright, but says they must meet requirements for permissions, transparency, presentation and conduct.
The changes include a filter that lets visitors exclude mods using AI, as well as updates intended to make AI labels more visible on mod pages. The disclosure requirement also applies to existing mods: their authors have 60 days to review and update their listings. Some of the planned backend changes will take longer to implement.
Site co-owner Foledinho said Nexus Mods supports human creativity, but argued that drawing a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable AI use would be difficult. The site’s position is that a blanket ban could discourage authors from being open about their use of AI, while disclosures would make that use visible and subject to platform rules.
Nexus Mods says it is also working on permission options covering AI use and training, as well as forks and derivative mods. The site says it will not use mods to train AI or sell or license them to others for that purpose. It has not yet resolved how permissions should work across existing licences, modified versions and projects that depend on other mods.
AI-generated and AI-assisted thumbnails remain a separate open question. Nexus Mods is not introducing rules for them yet, describing these cases as grey areas, but says the discussion will continue. The site also acknowledged that not every author will disclose AI use and said it is establishing moderation standards and consequences for rule-breaking.
