The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake has officially surpassed The Witcher 3 Remastered to claim the title of the best-reviewed game of 2026 on Metacritic. Until yesterday, The Witcher 3 Remastered held the top spot, having re-established itself as an essential experience eleven years after its original debut. However, the release of Nintendo's remake has shifted the rankings, securing a new record for the year.
The remake currently holds a Metascore of 96 out of 100, calculated from 83 reviews. This score places it just three points below the original game's historic Metascore of 99, which remains an unbroken benchmark in video game history. Despite the high expectations surrounding such a complex project, Nintendo has delivered a title that has received universal acclaim. The lowest score recorded for the remake is an 8, with only six reviews falling below a 9. Notably, there are currently no mixed or negative classifications among the aggregated scores.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma had expressed nervousness regarding how the remake would be received, but the critical response indicates that Nintendo has successfully met the challenge of reimagining one of the most celebrated chapters in gaming history. With the game launching on Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, attention now turns to whether Link can maintain this lead following the anticipated debut of GTA 6 and its protagonists, Jason and Lucia.
