Atari and Nightdive Studios have officially set the release date for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, confirming that the iconic first-person stealth game will return on December 3. The title will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. This remaster of the 1998 classic originally developed by Looking Glass Studios is priced at 29.99 euros for the standard edition and 34.99 euros for the Digital Deluxe version, which includes additional content such as the soundtrack and a development diary.
Developed by Nightdive Studios in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, the project utilizes the KEX engine to modernize the original's technical specifications. The update supports resolutions up to 4K and frame rates of up to 120 frames per second, alongside improvements to textures, character models, and animations. The remaster also introduces controls adapted for modern gamepads, a radial menu for selecting weapons and items, motion control compatibility, and the ability to replay completed missions.
Beyond the original 12 missions and the three additional levels from the 1999 Thief: Gold expansion, this version incorporates The Tarnished Mirror, a completely new campaign. This story was developed by the creators of Thief: The Black Parade, one of the most recognized fan-made expansions in the series. Nightdive and Eidos-Montréal worked directly with these creators to officially integrate the adventure into the game's universe. The new narrative serves as a bridge between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age, introducing new factions, settings, and enemies within a Lovecraftian horror-inspired atmosphere.
Thief: The Dark Project was instrumental in establishing the foundations of modern stealth gameplay, emphasizing light and sound mechanics to avoid detection rather than relying on constant combat. Players were required to utilize shadows, study guard patrol routes, and employ various tools to infiltrate large-scale environments. This remaster aims to preserve the original level design and core mechanics that made the game influential in the late 1990s while delivering Garrett's adventures with significant visual and technical enhancements.
