The developers behind Arc Raiders have acknowledged that the criticism surrounding their use of artificial intelligence for voice lines was fair and understandable. While the game launched with significant player interest due to its unique take on extraction shooters, this momentum was partially overshadowed by controversy over AI mimicking voice actors to supplement dialogue. Although the involved actors had signed contracts permitting this technology, many players expressed frustration, noting that some AI-generated lines sounded lifeless and odd compared to the high-quality performances of human NPCs like Marathon.

Embark Studios clarified that their reliance on AI was driven by efficiency rather than a preference for the technology, aiming to release updates more rapidly. Bence Pajor, the studio's audio director, explained that while actors were present throughout development, using them to record every specific instance required for dynamic features became unfeasible. With new items and features constantly being added, the volume of dialogue needed for systems like item pinging was too vast to record manually without overburdening the cast. Pajor noted that asking actors to read every possible variation as the game evolved quickly would have been impractical.

Despite these challenges, Embark has emphasized its commitment to supporting voice actors rather than replacing them. Chief Creative Officer Stefan Strandberg stated that the industry should celebrate performances and give actors more space, a goal the studio hopes to achieve in future updates for Arc Raiders by deepening character motivations and realism. Following the initial backlash, the studio has already taken steps to re-record lines with real human voices to inject more authenticity into the game. While replacing AI with human performance is viewed as a positive step, the incident highlights ongoing tensions in an industry often pressured to optimize costs through creative shortcuts.
