Horror resonates most when people are already worried about the world around them, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno told IGN at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok. He pointed to issues such as climate change, wars and economic pressures as sources of wider public anxiety that can make horror films, books and games especially effective.
Babieno said he was not pleased that the genre’s strength could be linked to difficult conditions, but believes those fears help explain why horror has found an audience across entertainment. Bloober Team has focused on the genre since the release of Layers of Fear in 2016, after earlier work that included casual games and contract projects.
The Polish studio is now developing seven horror games, according to the report. Its 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 has sold more than five million copies, and Babieno described the game as a turning point for the company. He said Bloober concentrated on delivering the best game it could despite criticism from some fans during development.
Babieno attributed the studio’s progress to working on horror project after horror project, refining both its approach to fear and its technology, while learning from fan feedback. He said the team evaluates each project by asking whether it represents a meaningful next step for the studio and its audience.
Four of the seven projects in development have been confirmed: a remake of the original Silent Hill, Layers of Fear 3, Nintendo Switch 2 game Onyx: The Dark Grip, and Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a psychological horror title. Bloober also has two first-party studios and recently added Broken Mirror Games, a label for co-development with five other Polish teams.
Babieno declined to comment on reports that the Silent Hill Remake could arrive in 2027, calling the details rumors. He also shared little about Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, but said he would not be working on the project without a strong commitment to it.
He was more forthcoming about Project H, the working title of the next game from the team behind Cronos: The New Dawn. The project is in the later stages of pre-production, Babieno said, and is intended to offer a fresh experience while retaining elements familiar to Bloober fans.
The studio’s next release is Cronos: Lazarus, a prequel expansion for Cronos: The New Dawn. It is set to launch on December 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release planned for early 2027.
