Video game research firm Sensor Tower has updated its tracking data for Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing that the open-world title has secured 7.71 million pre-purchase units to date. These unofficial figures translate to approximately $751 million in gross revenue ahead of the game's release. The platform breakdown shows a significant disparity, with PlayStation 5 leading the market by selling 5.74 million units, while Xbox Series X|S accounts for 1.97 million units.
This distribution indicates that 74% of current GTA 6 sales are occurring on Sony's console, leaving Microsoft's platform with a 26% share. In terms of revenue generation, PS5 sales have reached $559 million compared to $192 million for Xbox Series X|S. Both Sony and Microsoft retain roughly 30% of this revenue through platform fees, meaning the game's commercial success directly benefits both console manufacturers. Analysts note that this sales gap aligns with the broader market trend where PS5 unit sales currently outpace those of the Xbox Series X|S.
Despite the disparity, Microsoft has stated that GTA 6 is breaking records on its platform, with sales figures consistent with Xbox's current share of the console market. Sensor Tower projects that total pre-purchases could reach 25 million by launch day. If the current 74/26 split remains constant, this would result in approximately 18.5 million units sold on PS5 and 6.5 million on Xbox Series X|S. While Sony holds exclusive marketing rights for the title on PlayStation, Microsoft has engaged in promotional efforts, including the recent announcement of a custom Xbox console encased in an alligator.
Market research from Circana indicates that GTA 6 holds a 29% purchase intent among US console and PC gamers, representing nearly one in three players. This marks the highest purchase intent Circana has ever recorded for any game. The title is scheduled to launch on November 19 for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With a file size of approximately 212GB, preloading will begin more than a week prior to release. The game unlocks at midnight local time, meaning players in New Zealand will be the first globally to access it, while US players will be among the last due to time zone differences.
