itch.io says it has removed “a couple terabytes” of AI-generated material and is introducing measures to curb bulk uploads of low-quality games and assets. The indie game storefront said uploads it identifies as spam will be de-indexed, while filters for Generative AI disclosures will appear in more parts of the site, including search results.
The announcement follows a sharp rise in new game pages. Itch.io previously said the number created each day had doubled from 3,000 to 6,000 over two months, alongside reports of users posting dozens of AI-generated games at a time.
The platform is not banning AI-generated content outright. Its terms allow AI use when it is clearly disclosed and adds substantial value to the player experience, while iterative uploads are against the rules. The new search filter is intended to let users exclude games that disclose generative AI use.
In a social media post, Itch.io argued that the ability to upload large quantities of poorly optimized AI-generated models does not make doing so appropriate. The platform says it is taking a firmer stance on spam rather than prohibiting AI content altogether.
