Mount Hyjal is set to be the final zone in character progression in World of Warcraft Forever. During a guided visit to the game’s beta, the area’s designers showed how they adapted the iconic location into a high-level quest zone—and why its original layout made that work challenging.

Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield described Hyjal as a narrow, corridor-like area. The development team reshaped much of the terrain to widen parts of the zone and make it more practical to explore. The process involved repeated collaboration with the world-building team and testing different quest routes and atmospheres.

The updated lighting, fog and viewing distance give the mountain a more prominent visual presence. The developers also aim to use the environment to tell a story, with parts of Hyjal visible from the Barrens. The preview tour reached the summit, where Nordrassil, the World Tree, and the remains of Archimonde can be seen. A path there leads toward the arches of a new raid.

The team also pointed out a familiar undead paladin who appears to be more than a background detail. Greenfield said the character will have a story to tell later in the game. During early beta testing, players also found a way behind part of the terrain, prompting Lead Encounter Designer Mike Newthalls to block access to the area.

Despite the zone’s narrow, linear shape, the preview suggested that side paths lead to caves and other areas. Its steady climb toward the summit provides a clear endpoint for the leveling journey. The visual treatment stood out as especially polished compared with the classic-era setting, but the preview’s overall impression was positive, with Hyjal’s atmosphere and scale helping make it a striking final region.
