Dan Houser, a key figure at Rockstar Games until his departure following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, has revisited the reasons behind the cancellation of Agent. The spy adventure, which was officially announced at E3 2009 as an exclusive for the PlayStation 3, was removed from Rockstar's official website in 2021. Houser, who served as creative director and writer for numerous company titles including Max Payne 3, stated that the studio attempted to execute the project through various methods and even assigned it to different development teams.

The core issue lay in the attempt to replicate the spy film genre within the Grand Theft Auto open-world framework. Houser explained that this combination failed because the pacing required for spy narratives is fundamentally opposed to the freedom offered by sandbox games. In an interview with IGN, he noted that they tried with two or three different teams but could not make it work correctly. He concluded that they would never figure out how to realize the vision, adding that while others might try, he personally believes it is too difficult.

Houser elaborated on the structural conflict, noting that spy stories rely on a vertiginous pace and rapid transitions between locations. In contrast, Rockstar's style features a more spread-out rhythm. Despite testing many ideas and attempting excellent concepts, none fully succeeded in bridging this gap. This sentiment was previously expressed by Houser in 2025 during an interview on the Lex Fridman podcast, where he questioned whether a good open-world spy game could truly be made.

In recent discussions regarding his new company, Absurd Ventures, which focuses on cultural works across various media from comics to podcasts, Houser addressed the upcoming release of their first title. He acknowledged that this new open-world adventure will likely be compared to his previous work at Rockstar. Meanwhile, Rockstar Games is preparing for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
