Dwarf Fortress is expected to receive a new underground biome made from flesh and bone. The feature was mentioned by Bay 12 co-founder Tarn “Toady One” Adams in a “Future of the Fortress” discussion on the Bay 12 forums, where he answered questions about the game’s ongoing development.

Adams did not provide a release date, but said the biome would contain “meat terrain” such as muscle, bone, vertebral walls, sinew and sphincters. Players would reportedly be able to mine the material for resources. The biome will not include meat trees, while rivers of blood or other fluids would require a future fluid update that is not currently in the game.

Adams also dismissed the idea that the meat could become animated or rise as zombies, saying that ordinary meat cannot currently be animated. He did not explain the biome’s origin, leaving open whether it is a fungal formation or part of a much larger creature.

The discussion also covers planned changes to Dwarf Fortress’s magic system, including how arcane knowledge is classified, shared, preserved and lost across procedurally generated worlds. Bay 12 is additionally planning a crystal biome, though no further details or release timing were provided.
