PlayStation 5 has seen major hits, including God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3. But alongside those successes, several releases have disappointed players or fallen short of their potential. Here are five games that drew criticism for their results or execution.
Babylon’s Fall proved to be a particularly stark failure. The multiplayer action RPG struggled to attract players after launch, and Square Enix shut down its servers in less than a year. Its reception was especially surprising given that it was developed by PlatinumGames, a studio known for action games.
The Callisto Protocol arrived with high expectations. Striking Distance Studios and publisher Krafton presented it as a major production, while its director, Glen Schofield, had helped create the original Dead Space. The game impressed with its technical presentation and cinematic direction, but its gameplay, story and level design failed to convince. A problematic control system added to the criticism, and the title ultimately fell short of its ambitions.
Capcom’s Exoprimal put players in multiplayer battles against dinosaurs, but its gameplay was seen as derivative and its content offering limited. Those shortcomings made the experience feel repetitive over time. The game did not achieve significant commercial results, and Capcom announced within a year that it would stop releasing new updates.
Forspoken was not necessarily a bad game, but it failed to make the impact Square Enix had hoped for. The open-world action RPG focused on magical combat, yet its story, dialogue and characters were widely viewed as unmemorable. A lack of gameplay depth also made the experience wear thin over time, leaving its impressive technical presentation without enough to distinguish it from other games in the genre.
God of War Sons of Sparta took the series in a different direction as a 2D Metroidvania spin-off. Its main weakness, according to the source, was not a major design flaw but a lack of originality: its familiar approach struggled to stand out among more inventive games in the genre. Despite the franchise’s reputation, the spin-off quickly faded from attention.
