Gears of War: E-Day’s reported commercial performance is raising questions about the future of Xbox exclusives. The game has sold slightly more than 400,000 copies across Xbox consoles and PC, according to the latest figures cited in the original report.

That result appears particularly concerning when compared with the project’s reported development budget of more than $500 million, excluding marketing costs. Although E-Day is said to have achieved the series’ highest Metacritic score since the Xbox 360 generation, its sales so far are reportedly far from recovering the investment.

Microsoft also launched the game directly on Xbox Game Pass while keeping it exclusive to its own platforms. The company’s strategy is now under scrutiny, as questions emerge over whether new subscriptions and platform revenue can offset the additional sales that a PlayStation 5 version might have generated.

If Microsoft ultimately considers E-Day’s financial balance negative, it could reconsider its current policy. That could include releasing the game on competing consoles and accelerating Xbox’s transition toward a broader third-party publishing model.

The situation could also affect the future of the Gears of War franchise, one of Microsoft’s most important properties alongside Halo. With AAA projects at this scale requiring investments of around half a billion dollars, weak sales could make it more difficult to approve new games with similarly large budgets.
