Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode appears to have introduced a limited compromise for players seeking a PvE-focused experience. Story Missions now seem to place solo players in private instances during their first attempt, although Infinity Ward has not officially announced the change.
DMZ is designed as a PvPvE mode, and players can choose between freely exploring the map or taking part in Dynamic Ops, which continuously generate objectives. Story Missions appeared to offer a more private alternative, but at launch they could still include other players despite using smaller matchmaking pools. That created the possibility of unwanted player-versus-player encounters.
Recent player reports suggest that this may have changed for first-time solo attempts. During one investigation, a player completed a Story Mission without encountering anyone else, despite deliberately making noise. The Recent Players list also showed no other users, while no UAV Towers or SAM Sites appeared to have been activated—both uncommon observations in typical PvPvE matches.
The protection appears to have significant limitations. It reportedly applies only to solo players and only during their first attempt at a Story Mission. Subsequent runs are expected to be less forgiving, and some reports suggest that other players may still appear even during an initial mission. Players therefore have reasons to remain cautious.
The apparent adjustment reflects the divide within the DMZ community. While some players want the mode's intended PvPvE encounters, others would prefer to avoid contact with rival players altogether, particularly those expecting a purely PvE experience.
