Nexus Mods has introduced disclosure requirements for AI-generated and AI-assisted content, opting not to ban such mods outright. Creators must now state whether their work was made mostly with AI, created mainly by humans with some AI assistance, or made without AI. The disclosure also covers promotional materials.
For mods labelled “AI assisted,” authors must explain publicly where and how the technology was used. Nexus says the labels will appear prominently alongside other tags. The policy applies to all mods on the site, including projects uploaded before the announcement.
New uploads are subject to the rules immediately. Existing mods have a 60-day grace period, which began on November 3, 2026, and ends on January 2, 2027. Nexus owner Victor Folmann said the platform prefers transparent disclosures to an outright ban, arguing that a ban would not remove AI from modding but could discourage creators from acknowledging its use.
Nexus also says it will not use mods to train AI or sell them to third parties for that purpose. New permissions will allow authors to specify whether other parties may use their creations for AI purposes or training; the default setting is “Ask Me.”
The platform acknowledges that some creators may not disclose their AI use. It says the policy will be backed by moderation standards and consequences for violations.
