OpenMW 0.52 RC1, a release candidate for the open-source reimplementation of Morrowind’s engine, is now available. The update brings a collection of fixes and new features, including changes to how gravity and movement work in the game.

The release implements terminal velocity and corrects gravity, which had been slightly off. It also changes water-walking actors so they drown if knocked unconscious.

Another major addition is clustered lighting, which removes the usual per-object light limit. According to an earlier OpenMW development post cited in the release coverage, the approach can have a much lower performance impact than simply increasing that limit, and may perform better in some cases.

OpenMW is designed to run Morrowind on modern systems. Version 0.52 RC1 is a preview of the upcoming 0.52 release; the report does not give a final release date.
