Sony’s Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) may be difficult to add to games already available on PlayStation 5, according to developers who spoke with Digital Foundry. The outlet’s latest update suggests that few released games are likely to receive patches adding support for the AI upscaling technology in the near future.
Sony engineers had previously told Digital Foundry that implementing QSSR in a game could take a couple of days. However, developers consulted by the outlet offered a different perspective: QSSR works with a newer version of the development kit, while many existing games were built using older versions.
To add QSSR to a released game, developers may first need to update it to work with the latest software development kit. Digital Foundry’s sources said that process could involve substantial work, particularly for older titles. Games still in development are a different case, as adding support for the technology is reportedly easier.
As a result, QSSR may appear mainly in upcoming games rather than through updates to existing ones. Digital Foundry has expressed hope that GTA 6 will use the technology to address some minor issues it identified during an extended look at the game.
