Aaron Garbut, development director at Rockstar North, has discussed the pressure surrounding the creation of Grand Theft Auto VI and the expectations placed on the game by the player community.
In an interview with Edge, Garbut said Rockstar could not simply release a game that matched what audiences might already expect, describing that approach as the easy option. He added that the team had not compromised the title's scale, detail, interactivity, story or open-world design.
Garbut also acknowledged the extraordinary expectations surrounding GTA 6 with a metaphor describing the team's approach to development: “I have a feeling we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.”
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The open-world action and driving game will be set in Vice City and follow Jason and Lucia, two criminals on the run. Retail boxes will contain a download code rather than a physical disc. Rockstar has not officially announced a PC version.
