Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida says the upcoming Evercold story will place greater emphasis on pacing. In comments from a translated group interview, Yoshida acknowledged that Dawntrail’s focus on introducing new lands, cultures and encounters slowed the main story’s progression and did not always match players’ desire to keep moving forward.

For Evercold, story segments centered on those elements will be shifted into side quests, allowing players to explore them at their own pace while keeping the main narrative moving more quickly. The comments were shared via the r/FFXIV subreddit.

The approach has prompted debate over whether Dawntrail’s main issue was the amount of worldbuilding itself. The expansion established Tural as a young nation facing a succession crisis after the reign of its first king, a premise that offered several potentially strong narrative foundations.

However, much of that worldbuilding had limited impact on the characters or the central emotional conflicts. The cultures introduced during the story often did not return in meaningful ways, with the Mamool Ja and the Skydeep Cenote standing out as exceptions. The relationships between Wuk Lamat and her siblings were also not explored in depth through the societies she encountered.

The rite of succession likewise included opportunities for character-focused conflict that were not fully developed. Contestants were assigned partners, for example, but Wuk Lamat was paired with Koana rather than someone with whom the arrangement could have created greater tension.

Moving worldbuilding to side quests may help the main story’s tempo, but it does not necessarily address whether those details connect to the characters and themes. The early Evercold introductory patch story nevertheless offers some encouragement, using moments such as Visna’s reaction to the group’s approach without stating its identity to communicate the conditions of the icy setting through the characters themselves.
