Nintendo set clear limits on what to update and what to preserve when developing its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi told GameSpot. The team wanted to improve how the game felt to play without changing its core experience or storytelling.

Fujibayashi said the early discussions focused on using Nintendo Switch 2 hardware to reduce friction during gameplay and help players enjoy the game more fully. The remake retains the original’s foundations while adding updated controls, including a dedicated jump action.

The team debated the jump button extensively, Fujibayashi said, before deciding that letting players jump freely would make exploration smoother and give them more agency. Updated graphics were also intended to communicate more information to players, while the audio has been upgraded to 5.1-channel surround sound for the background music.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for Switch 2 on November 5. GameSpot’s review describes the remake as a faithful presentation that lets the original’s strengths shine through.
