GTA 6 is expected to feature a vast map, with current estimates placing its playable area between 50 and 65 square miles. Even at the upper end of that range, it would be far smaller than the world of Xenoblade Chronicles X, whose planet Mira is estimated at 154 square miles.
Those projections would make GTA 6’s map roughly three times smaller than Mira. The source also compares the anticipated area with other open-world games: Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring are each estimated at around 30.5 square miles, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild covers about 23.5 square miles and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt around 21 square miles.
Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles X first launched on Wii U in 2015. Director Tetsuya Takahashi said during development that its world needed to be more than five times larger than the first Xenoblade Chronicles to justify the use of Skells, mech suits around five times a person’s height. The finished map exceeded that initial target.
The game returned as Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch in March 2025, with ergonomic improvements, additional story content and a new Skell called Hraesvelg. It is also compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, where it offers an improved frame rate and up to 4K resolution in TV mode.
The article notes that some games have larger maps still, including Fuel, The Crew, Atlas and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Daggerfall’s procedurally generated world is estimated at around 161,600 square kilometres.
