Sony’s announcement of QSSR for the base PlayStation 5 has renewed speculation about whether Microsoft will bring a comparable upscaler to Xbox-series-x-s/">Xbox Series X|S, either through FSR 4 or a proprietary solution. Digital Foundry has weighed in on the possibility, which remains hypothetical.

The outlet’s journalists say the consoles’ RDNA 2 architecture should be capable of supporting a neural upscaler such as FSR 4, provided it receives specific optimizations. AMD is expected to bring FSR 4 to laptops, handheld consoles and APUs by the end of 2026 or, at the latest, early 2027, according to Digital Foundry’s discussion.

However, Digital Foundry argues that Microsoft may have to wait for AMD’s next moves. The outlet points to AMD’s close relationship with Sony on upscaling technology and the development of next-generation RDNA hardware and PS6 with Project Amethyst.

Richard Leadbetter, Digital Foundry’s founder, also highlighted Grand Theft Auto 6 as a potential factor. If the base PS5 version of the game supports QSSR, he said, a visual gap with Xbox Series X could push Microsoft to accelerate either a proprietary upscaler or an FSR 4 version adapted for RDNA 2. No such Xbox implementation has been announced.
